In a world where pain often hides behind a Sunday smile, the Church has a sacred opportunity: to be the first place people turn when life gets hard—not the last.

Mental health is not just a cultural conversation; it’s a gospel one. When Jesus met the hurting, He didn’t refer them away—He drew near. And we’re called to do the same.

At The Church Cares, we believe that care begins with presence, not perfection. That’s why we train lay leaders in biblically grounded, psychologically wise skills that any church can use. It’s not about becoming experts. It’s about being available.

The Crisis We Can’t Ignore

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental illness each year (NAMI). Yet many churches feel unequipped to respond. Pastors are overwhelmed. Volunteers are unsure. Hurting people often suffer in silence.

But there’s a better way.

What If Every Church Had a CARE Team?

Our model is simple and scalable: train everyday believers to listen well, offer encouragement, and know when to refer. It’s called the CARE framework, and it works. Through partnerships with platforms like 7 Cups, churches can extend a digital support layer while remaining rooted in local, in-person presence.

You Don’t Need a Degree to Make a Difference

We’ve seen greeters, small group leaders, and women’s ministry volunteers become Jesus' hands and feet to someone in distress. You don’t need a counseling license to love people well—you need compassion, training, and a community of support.

Need Help Starting? You’re Not Alone

Whether you’re a pastor, volunteer, or concerned church member, there’s a place for you in this mission. Explore our growing list of tools and trainings at thechurchcares.com, and consider these trusted partners in the journey:

  • Mental Health America: A great resource for understanding mental health conditions and getting screened.

  • Barna Group: For research-driven insights into the intersection of faith and mental health.

  • CareNet: For churches supporting families in crisis and unplanned pregnancies.

Let’s Be the Church That Cares

The gospel is good news for the hurting, too. Let’s make sure no one has to face pain alone. Because when the Church shows up with presence and love, Christ is made visible—and healing begins.
